One of the academic nerve centres of West Africa is the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, situated in Owerri, the capital of Imo State Nigeria. It was established in 1963 and it has a current student population of about twelve thousand (12,000). It also possesses an academic staff population of over five hundred (500) that are among the best in Nigeria in terms of qualification and experience. The Institution has the following academic programmes:

  • Degree programme in different subject areas leading to the award of Bachelor degree (B.A./B.Sc/Ed);
  • Professional diploma in Education (PDE)
  • Nigeria Certificate in Education (N.C.E) programme in different subject areas;
  • Pre-NCE-programmes in different subjects including the Special Science Programme (SSP);
  • The International Centre for English Studies (I.C.E.S.) programme.

The Alvan Ikoku College of Education occupies a special position among the Teacher Education projects with which the organization has been associated in Nigeria. The rapidity of growth of the College on a solid base, its receptivity to new educational theory and practice, together With its capacity for absorption of external assistance are exemplary. With government’s approval, we would wish to include this College among the innovative institutions of Africa, thus making it a point of reference for others to turn to.


The INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR ENGLISH STUDIES (ICES) is part of this desire to initiate new educational theory and practice. The Centre was commissioned by Prof. A. B. Fafunwa on August 10, 1992 with an initial in­take of Seventy-three (73) students drawn from various Francophone West African Countries to undertake an intensive English Language course for one session. The general objective of the Centre is to enable students to attain proficiency in the English Language for different purposes. The Centre has a number of programmes towards the attainment of this objective:

  • The Centre prepares students for the Joint Matriculation Examination (JME/JAMB) for students wishing to gain admission to Nigerian Universities.


  • It prepares Graduate Students who wish to attain proficiency in the English language to enable them to undertake post-graduate studies in Nigerian Universities.


  • The Centre provides a short-term programme designed for business men and women, tourists, lecturers, Embassy staff and other categories of people for the general purpose of attaining proficiency in the English language.


The Centre insists on unity of professionalism and individuality in a programme of courses that assures success. Thus the Centre stresses the optimum conception and realization of language courses, a friendly class atmosphere and a one-to-one guidance. All the courses have the following characteristics: qualified and experienced teaching staff; progressive teaching methods; modern instructional media; course and homework materials designed for each class; a motivating yet relaxed learning atmosphere; rapid progress through the consistent introduction of the English-speaking Nigerian surroundings into the courses; an accompanying programme which integrates the Nigerian culture through excursions and individual assistance in scholastic and extra scholastic affairs.



We admit students with O Level result or its equivalent in any non English speaking country for those wishing to further their studies in any Nigerian university or any university in any English speaking country. We also admit students with or with O level results for those wishing to do business in any country where English is their official language. Students are offered accommodation by the college in the students’ hostels. Feeding arrangements are also made for them. On pay as you eat bases As much as possible the students mix up with their Nigerian counterparts to enable them to learn English as quickly as possible. Students are expected to have up-to-date passport and visas before registration.

However, the College may offer assistance to Students on immigration matters when necessary



Excursions to places of interest are arranged for students from time to time. The college also has a programme for family integration whereby students are sent to different homes to spend weekends. Contentment in the extra-curricular parts of life is a prerequisite for the learning of a new language. Of course the town of Owerri and its premier institution offer the participants a wide variety of activities. A part of the Centre’s services in the scholastic and extra-scholastic spheres is the fulfillment of individual cultural or educational needs as well as social contact. Thus we arrange visits to the city of Owerri, take excursions, visit museums, exhibitions, and tourist centres within the region. In the evenings, visits to the theatre or concerts are offered and the Centre appreciates self-initiative at school parties or other activities. There are equally whole day excursions to places that enlighten the participants to cultural, economic and socio-political facts about Africa.



The fees charged by the Institution for the numerous and complex activities at the Centre are moderate. At the moment the fees for one year is pegged at N51, 500.00 (Fifty one thousand five hundred naira. The fees make it possible for the participant to:

  1. use the library facilities
  2. secure accommodation in the college premises
  3. procure an identity card
  4. enjoy moderate medical attention
  5. be taken on some excursion trips
  6. use the library
  7. Use the facilities of the institution for sports.



Students may be self-sponsored or sponsored by Government Agencies.


Students at the International Centre for English Studies use the Medical facilities of the Institution. The medical officers and nurses are professionals who possess adequate experience for both normal medical problems and emergencies. In addition, the location of the Centre in an Institution which is in the capital city of one of Nigeria’s most vibrant States makes it possible for further medical attention to be secured at the Government Specialist hospital.              (Picture medical centre)









L’un des centres-nerveux académiques de l’ Afrique de l’ Ouest est l’ Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, situé á Owerri, la capitale de 1’etat de’Imo au Nigeria. Etabli en 1963, sa population actuelle d’etudiants s’élève environ á douze mille (12,000). Fait partie de ce désir d’initier de nouvelles théories et pratiques pédagogiques. L’Honorable ancien Ministre d’Education, le Prof. A.B. Fafunwa a inauguré le centre le 10 aout, 1992 avec une inscription initiale de soixante-treize (73) étudiants tirés de plusieurs pays francophones de S Afrique de 1’ouest pour suivre des cours intensifs dsAnglais pour une année scolaire.

Le but général du centre est d’aider les étudiants à atteindre une maîtrise de la langue anglaise pour des buts drffeYents.   I.e Centre dispose d’un certain nombre de programmes pour I’accotnptisseinent de cet objectif.

  • Le centre prépare les etudiants à passer le concourse d’immatriculation aux université Nigerianes (JME) organise par le JAMB.


  • II prépare les licenciés qui veulent atteindre une maîtrise de la langtte aiaglaise leur permettant d’entreprendre des éludes plus élevées dans les Universités Nigér


  • Le centre fournit ua programme de couite durée destiné aux: hommes et femmes d’affaires, touristes, enseignants, personnels des Ambassades et aux autres catégories de gens, qui veulent atteindre une maîtrise de la langue

Le centre insiste sur une harmonie de professionalisme et d’individualité dans un programme de eours qui assure le succés. Ainsi le centre met-il 1’accent sur 1’optimum dans la cenceptualisation et la réalisation de cours de langue, une ambiance amicale dans la classe et une direction pour chaque étudiant. Tons les cours possédent les caractéristiques suivantes: un corps de personnel enseignant quaiitié et expérimenté; des methodes d’enseignant progressives; des moyens modernes d’instruction; des matériels de cours el de devoir programmés pour chaque classe; une ambiance d’enseignement à la fois détendue et motivante, un progrés rapide dũa 1’introduction systématique des environements anglophones du Nigéria; un programme supplemeataire qui intégre la culture Nigeriane à travers des excursions et 1’aide individuelle en matiéres scolaires et extra-scolaires.



Les formulaires d’admission s’obtiennent au college sur paiement des frais préscits.


Le centre dispose d’un laboratoire bien équipé pour 1’enseignement de langue. II a aussi des projecteurs de films et des diapositives. Les services de bibliothéques sont fournis. La grande biblothéque de 1’institution ainsi que celles du département de Littérature, des Départements d’Anglais et de Francais sont di sponsibles.


Les étudiants sont logés parle collége dans les pavilions d’étudiants. II y a des restaurants pour les étudiants. Autant que possible les étudiants du centre s’intégrent dans les activités de leurs camarades nigérians pour leur permettre d’apprendre 1’anglais aussi rapidement que possibe. Les étudiants sont logés aussi dans des families accueilantes.


II est-prevu que les étudiants se minissent de passeports et de visas en cours de validité avante de s’incrire au programme. Néanmoins, le collége peut venir à 1’aide des étudiants en matiére d’immigration si besoin est.


Les excursions aux lieux d’intéret sont organisées de temps en temps pour les étudiants. Le collége a aussi un programme d’intégration en fammille par lequel les étudiants sont envoyés à passer des week-ends avec des familles. Le contentement dans la vie socio-culturalle constitue une nécessité préalable pour I’apprentissage d’une nouvellc langue. Bien entendu la ville d’Owerri et sa première Institution offrent aux participants une grande variété d’activités. L’un des services du centre dans les domaines scolaires et extra-scolaires est raccomplissement des besoins culturels et éducatifs de 1’individu aussi bien que des contacts sociaux. Ainsi organise – 1 – 6n des visites a la ville d’Owerri, des excursions, des visites aux mus-ées, des participations aux exhibitions et des tours des lieux d’intérét touristiques dans la région. Les etudiants du centre International d’Études Anglaiscs se servent des facilités médicales de I’lnstitution. Les médecins et les infirmiéres sont des professionnels qui possédent 1’expérience adéquate pour les problemés médicoux corrnaux et les cas d’urgency. En plus, 1’emplacement du centre dans une institutionisituée dans la capitale de 1’un des plus vibrants états du Nigeria permet d’obtenir davantage des soins médicaux  I’Hopital Spécialiste, du Government.
